How can you tell the difference between muscle tone and bulk, and what are the different types of workouts that will get you toned without looking bulky?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this blog post, I\u2019ll explain the difference between getting toned and getting bulky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>WHAT IS TONING?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Being toned and \u201ctoning up\u201d up your body are very common fitness goals. But there\u2019s no proper definition for it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My idea of being toned can be quite different from yours. Your friend may think she looks too muscular and bulky but you may think she looks amazing and toned. That\u2019s totally ok, but it can cause confusion!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I\u2019ll try to give you a general explanation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, when people say they want toned body they mean they want a lean, slim body. Victoria\u2019s Secret models, ballet dancers, and aerobics instructors often have this look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you say you want to tone up, you probably mean you want to look leaner with some nice muscle definition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what about bulking?<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/muscle-toning.jpg\" alt=\"muscle toning\" class=\"wp-image-16787\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/muscle-toning.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/muscle-toning-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>WHAT IS BULKING?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In my experience, men are much more likely to want to bulk up, while usually women want to tone up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like with toning, there is no real definition for bulking, but it always means increasing one\u2019s muscle mass in some form.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some people, bulking also requires lowering body fat, but it doesn\u2019t have to.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you think about bulking up, you can picture rugby players and bodybuilders. They\u2019re big, they\u2019re strong, and they are usually male.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For most women that I have come across, bulky is defined as having <em>too much muscle<\/em> for their liking, particularly in the shoulders and legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, some women want to get bigger, and that\u2019s fine! It\u2019s just a matter of personal preference and no one should be judged for the way they want to look!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same goes for women that prefer a slimmer, more feminine look. If they want to be leaner, they shouldn\u2019t be pressured to build more muscle than they would like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important that we\u2019re all happy and that we feel confident in our class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>I WANT TO BE TONED, NOT BULKY. WHAT SHOULD I DO?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When I first got into fitness, I also wanted to get toned but I wasn\u2019t sure exactly how to do it. I was doing mostly cardio in the beginning and didn\u2019t really have a resistance training routine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You see, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/how-to-get-skinny-legs-cardio-for-lean-legs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">cardio is great for reducing overall body fat<\/a> and for keeping you slim but it doesn\u2019t build enough muscle for you to get toned. If you want to get toned, you need to build some muscle and you cannot build muscle if you avoid resistance training. Resistance training also helps to reduce body fat so it\u2019s a win win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I realized this, I started doing weights as my resistance training.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first I was super happy about my results. I was still slim and I finally got toned (with proper abs too).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as I started lifting heavier and heavier, my legs became too muscular and my back became too broad for my own liking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At that time I didn\u2019t know my body type and I didn\u2019t realize that lifting heavy and doing a high number of reps would make me bulky instead of lean. Understanding my body type was so important for getting the body I had been working so hard to get!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three different body types. Each one is going to respond to training differently. That way, you\u2019ll reduce body fat (if you need to) and you\u2019ll keep it off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few basic tips:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/how-to-calculate-your-daily-calorie-intake\/\" target=\"_blank\">Learn how many calories<\/a> you should be eating in a day. Track your calories for a few days to make sure you\u2019re eating enough. You don\u2019t have to do it constantly. But it\u2019s good to know that you&#8217;re eating enough for your body type, age and activity level. I\u2019ve found that walking is great for slimming down my thighs, but I also enjoy boxing and running.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re unhappy with your weight and you have extra body fat, you should be focusing on reducing overall body fat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re already slim or if you have a body type that doesn\u2019t gain weight very easily, then doing lots and lots of cardio without any type of resistance training might just make you look <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/what-to-do-if-youre-skinny-fat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">skinny fat<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, this is why understanding your body type matters! :)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/muscle-toning-2.jpg\" alt=\"lean and toned\" class=\"wp-image-16793\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/muscle-toning-2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/muscle-toning-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>DON\u2019T AVOID RESISTANCE TRAINING<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ok, so this one goes for all body types. It is easy to get scared of resistance training because people usually associate it with lifting heavy. And lifting heavy is usually associated with bulkiness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you don\u2019t have to do heavy weights to build muscle tone. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/how-to-get-skinny-legs-how-to-do-weights-without-getting-bulky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">other types of resistance training<\/a> that will help you get lean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to avoid bulkiness, try bodyweight training or lighter weights with high reps. And the key is choosing the <em>correct exercises<\/em>. Some exercises (such as squats and overhead pressing) can cause bulkiness, especially for endomorph and mesomorph body types.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/female-guide-how-to-get-lean-and-not-bulky-skinny-legs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">toning requires some muscle definition<\/a>. Most models who are in great shape have a definition in their abs, legs, and arms! Make sure you aren\u2019t overdoing it though, especially if your classes have lots of squats, squat jumps, squat holds or burpees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>BOXING &#8211; I love doing boxing because it gives me both cardio and resistance training in one session and it works my whole body. I usually notice results quickly in my arms and abs with boxing. Cardio will help you lose fat and get a slimmer look, and resistance training will help you build muscle tone and reduce body fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also do some power walking after your resistance training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is beneficial to do cardio after a resistance training session because this type of training uses up your glycogen stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means your body will use more fat during your cardio workout (for more information on this, check out my previous blog post on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/how-to-get-skinny-legs-cardio-for-lean-legs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">cardio<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/muscle-toning-5.jpg\" alt=\"muscle toning\" class=\"wp-image-16796\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/muscle-toning-5.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/muscle-toning-5-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HOW DO I AVOID GETTING BULKY?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I already talked about what to do if you want to be toned. Here\u2019s what not to do:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HIIT<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>HIIT is great! It burns tons of calories and it boosts your metabolism so you keep burning calories even after you\u2019re done working out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, depending on your body type, HIIT workouts that have a lot of squats, lunges and burpees may cause you to bulk up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve had lots of women complain to me about this so I created my own HIIT routines that shouldn\u2019t make your thighs bigger.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of my favourite full body HIIT workouts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/full-body-hiit-workout-that-wont-add-bulk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Full body HIIT workout that won&#8217;t add bulk<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/hiit-workout-for-slim-body\/\">HIIT workout for a slim and toned body<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/female-guide-how-to-get-lean-and-not-bulky-skinny-legs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"RELATED POST: THE FEMALE GUIDE ON HOW TO GET LEAN AND NOT BULKY (opens in a new tab)\">RELATED POST: THE FEMALE GUIDE ON HOW TO GET LEAN AND NOT BULKY<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LIFTING HEAVY WEIGHTS<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Personally, I noticed that my legs got too muscular after lots of heavy squats and deadlifts. So, if you are a mesomorph or endomorph body type, lifting heavy weights will probably bulk you up.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/muscle-toning-6.jpg\" alt=\"how to lift weights without getting bulky\" class=\"wp-image-16797\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/muscle-toning-6.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/muscle-toning-6-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CROSSFIT<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I loved doing Crossfit, but it made me bulkier than I wanted. If you\u2019re an ectomorph, you can probably do Crossfit without getting too muscular. But for other body types, it might be best to avoid it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>STEP MACHINES<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These are popular at the gym, but they will engage your quads and probably make your thighs bigger rather than slim them down. If you don\u2019t want to grow your thighs, it may be better to avoid these and other types of machines that target your quads.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/muscle-toning-7.jpg\" alt=\"how to slim down your thighs\" class=\"wp-image-16798\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/muscle-toning-7.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/muscle-toning-7-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SPRINTING AND RUNNING UPHILL&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It will probably make your legs bigger.
