In moderation, coffee can be a great way to get some extra energy and it does have some health benefits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, coffee does contain caffeine which is a mild diuretic and it is addictive. It also helps your brain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/coffee-brain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">increase neural firing<\/a> and release transmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, caffeine can help you feel happier, respond faster, and even remember information easier!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">COFFEE LOWERS YOUR RISK OF GETTING SOME SERIOUS MEDICAL ISSUES<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have shown that people who drink coffee regularly may be less likely to get <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00125-014-3235-7\" target=\"_blank\">Type 2 Diabetes<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5420628\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alzheimer\u2019s, and Parkison\u2019s<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">CAN CAFFEINE HELP WITH WEIGHT LOSS?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Caffeine is often used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/garcinia-cambogia-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"weight loss supplements  (opens in a new tab)\">weight loss supplements <\/a>but does it actually help with weight loss?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what I\u2019ve learned!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caffeine is the only supplement that has been proven to increase the number of calories your body burns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also one of the few substances known to help release stored fat from your fat tissues. (I\u2019ll explain in a bit!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it can help you exercise better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HOW&nbsp;COFFEE&nbsp;AFFECTS&nbsp;YOUR&nbsp;METABOLISM<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>OK, guys, I need to get a little technical for just a moment (stay with me!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount of calories you burn during the day is made up of 3 things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>YOUR RESTING (BASAL) METABOLIC RATE &#8211;&nbsp; how many calories you burn while resting;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>THERMOGENESIS&nbsp; &#8211;&nbsp; how many calories you burn through digestion (this sort of falls under the resting metabolic rate category); and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY &#8211;&nbsp; how many calories you burn during exercise.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/speed-up-your-metabolism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">higher metabolism<\/a>, you\u2019ll burn more calories than someone who doesn\u2019t have a high metabolism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your resting or basal metabolic rate (RMR or BMR) makes up the MOST of your daily calorie burn.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that if you want to lose weight and burn more calories, it\u2019s important that you increase your resting metabolic rate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>COFFEE MAY BOOST YOUR METABOLISM<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Coffee can help speed up your resting metabolic rate by 3\u20134% and it can improve your thermogenesis (calories burned during digestion), as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2912010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">this study<\/a> showed. The more coffee you drink, the greater the effect will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, unfortunately, caffeine is more likely to raise the metabolism of somebody who is young and who is already thin than it would in an older or overweight person.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So yeah, coffee can help increase your metabolism but if you are overweight, it may not have that effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to increase your resting metabolic rate is to build muscle mass since muscle burn LOTS of calories. Your metabolism will be faster if you have more muscle than fat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not suggesting that you need to lift super heavyweights and get super muscular. But if don\u2019t already have resistance training in your fitness routine, I highly recommend you include it. I love doing <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/prefer-bodyweight-training-lifting-weights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bodyweight training<\/a> or <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/full-body-hiit-workout-that-wont-add-bulk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HIIT<\/a> but you can do also do yoga or pilates :)<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Drinking-coffee-graphic-2-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"can coffee boost metabolism\" class=\"wp-image-40577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Drinking-coffee-graphic-2-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Drinking-coffee-graphic-2-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Drinking-coffee-graphic-2-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Drinking-coffee-graphic-2.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>So to sum it all up, if you have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/how-to-drop-body-fat-in-one-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"high body fat percentage (opens in a new tab)\">high body fat percentage<\/a> and very little muscle, your metabolism will be slower and coffee is not going to speed it up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you build muscle and lower your overall body fat, coffee may help you stay lean by increasing your metabolism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HOW CAFFEINE HELPS FAT LOSS<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Caffeine is one of the few substances known to <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10068-010-0151-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">help release stored fat from your fat tissues<\/a> during exercise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You see, when you\u2019re exercising or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/intermittent-fasting-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"fasting (opens in a new tab)\">fasting<\/a>, the fat stored in your fat tissues get released into your bloodstream and used for energy. This process is called lipolysis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what does caffeine have to do with it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, it seems that caffeine stimulates your nervous system and helps the process of lipolysis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10068-010-0151-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">drink coffee before exercising<\/a>, your body will release more stored fat which means you\u2019ll able to burn more of it and get more energy for your workout. This is why most pre-workout supplements contain caffeine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this leads me to my next point!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CAFFEINE&nbsp;CAN&nbsp;IMPROVE&nbsp;YOUR&nbsp;CARDIO WORKOUT<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lots of professional athletes use caffeine as a supplement because it helps improve endurance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/481158\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Researchers have found<\/a> that athletes who consume caffeine before a cardio workout tend to do better than those who don\u2019t have caffeine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/how-to-get-skinny-legs-cardio-for-lean-legs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cardio exercises<\/a> are great exercises to do if you want to lose weight because they help you burn fat. Coffee is going to help you release more stored fat and cardio will help you burn it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, drinking coffee won\u2019t outdo a bad diet or lack of exercise, so make sure you\u2019re doing those things too. :)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though coffee has some wonderful benefits for your mind and body, it may have some negative side effects, especially if you overdo it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>COFFEE CAN MAKE YOU FEEL JITTERY OR EVEN ANXIOUS<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people may feel shaky, jittery and anxious after drinking coffee. If this is the case for you, try taking your coffee with a meal or maybe switch to decaf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>COFFEE&nbsp;CAN&nbsp;BE&nbsp;ADDICTIVE<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As you\u2019ve probably heard, caffeine is addictive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When people (especially regular coffee drinkers) stop drinking coffee, they can experience some bad withdrawal symptoms, like headaches, confusion, and feeling extra tired.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>COFFEE&nbsp;CAN&nbsp;MESS&nbsp;UP&nbsp;YOUR&nbsp;SLEEP<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Caffeine is all about waking us up. That\u2019s part of why we like it so much! But, if you\u2019re having trouble sleeping, check your coffee intake.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you drinking coffee in the afternoon? That might be the cause of your restlessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you drink coffee, it is best to try to avoid it after about 2 PM.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO DRINK COFFEE IF YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>DON\u2019T DRINK IT WITH LOTS OF SUGARS, CREAMERS, OR ARTIFICIAL FLAVORINGS<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Coffee isn\u2019t bad for you (in general), but the things we like adding to our coffee can be! I know that adding sugar, caramel, milk and other things to coffee can make it delicious, but it sadly isn\u2019t very good for you, especially if you\u2019re trying to lose weight!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easy to think that the calories from a drink don&#8217;t matter, but a lot of coffee drinks can have as many calories as a snack or sometimes a meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you absolutely can\u2019t have your coffee black, try adding a bit of milk or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/milk-alternatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">a milk alternative<\/a> (like coconut milk) instead of artificial creamer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>DRINK&nbsp;IT&nbsp;EARLY&nbsp;IN&nbsp;THE&nbsp;DAY<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Try to drink coffee early in the day so that it doesn\u2019t keep you up at night. Sleep is also a very important <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/worst-thing-weight-loss-dont-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">part of the weight loss process<\/a>. I would advise you against drinking coffee after 2 or 3 PM.  <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SHOULD I DRINK COFFEE?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Coffee has some good benefits that might help you with weight loss (as long as you\u2019re also exercising and eating healthy).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you aren\u2019t a coffee drinker already, I don\u2019t think you need to start drinking it for weight loss reasons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exercise and a healthy diet are much more important :)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you struggle with sleep, anxiety or some other health issues, coffee might not be right for you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, you\u2019ll have
