I\u2019ll show you how to tailor your HIIT to make it a fat-burning activity that will assist you in getting those slim and toned legs!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may know from my previous blog post on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/how-to-get-skinny-legs-cardio-for-lean-legs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cardio<\/a> that low to moderate-intensity cardio is a fat-burning activity, whereas HIIT and weights typically are not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HIIT and weights are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livestrong.com\/article\/358235-examples-of-aerobic-anaerobic-activities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">anaerobic activity,<\/a> which means your body uses glycogen (carbs) as the main fuel source, not fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardio is an aerobic activity, which means your body uses glycogen (carbs) and fat as the main fuel source. When you do cardio your body gets into the fat-burning zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that HIIT and weights typically <i>do not burn fat.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>CARDIO (longer duration steady state exercise) \u2013&gt; AEROBIC\u2013&gt; BURNS FAT<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>HIIT (short bursts of high-intensity exercise) \u2013&gt; ANAEROBIC\u2013&gt; BURNS GLYCOGEN<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SO WHY DO WE STILL NEED TO DO HIIT THEN?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HIIT is great because it increases your general cardiovascular fitness and your anaerobic threshold. This means that during exercise your body will remain in the aerobic (fat-burning) zone for longer, before switching to the anaerobic pathway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result? You can exercise for longer and at a higher intensity and still burn fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HOW TO DO HIIT EFFECTIVELY FOR FAT BURNING<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The best fat-burning HIIT workout exercise is interval running. It is similar to sprinting but they are not quite the same. Let me explain :)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SPRINTING<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are sprinting for 15-30 seconds at your absolute fastest speed, with a 30-second rest, your body is using the anaerobic pathway and is predominantly glycogen.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/is-walking-or-running-better-for-fat-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sprinting<\/a> is a great workout. It engages your muscles more and focuses on muscular power. So you\u2019re likely to build more muscles with sprinting&nbsp;than with just steady-state running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t mind a more muscular look, then this is probably a great style of workout for you. But if you prefer a more lean and slim look, it might be best to avoid this type of training and focus on interval running instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>INTERVAL RUNNING<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are running at a fast but not maximum speed for 90 seconds to 2 minutes, your body will most likely remain in the aerobic zone for the majority of the time. This means you&#8217;ll continue to burn fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fitter you are, the longer your body will remain in the aerobic (fat burning) zone before switching to anaerobic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result? You&#8217;ll burn more fat!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/INTERVAL-RUNNING-1-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"fat burning hiit workout\" class=\"wp-image-40804\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/INTERVAL-RUNNING-1-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/INTERVAL-RUNNING-1-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/INTERVAL-RUNNING-1-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/INTERVAL-RUNNING-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>HOW TO GET LEAN LEGS BY USING HIIT &#8211; FAT BURNING HIIT<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Interval running is the best type of HIIT for fat-burning and achieving a skinny legs for me :) I started to use this technique a couple of years ago when I was training for a triathlon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I used fast-paced interval runs (not a full-on sprint) to help me develop my cardio fitness faster. And it definitely helped with my cardio fitness, as I expected. But I also noticed something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You see, I\u2019m a mesomorph body type and I can build muscle fairly quickly, especially on my legs. And interval running actually helped me lean out my legs. You can read my blog where I talked about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/how-to-get-skinny-legs-cardio-for-lean-legs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how Cardio can help in getting those skinny legs<\/a> :) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SHOULD I TRY INTERVAL RUNNING?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your goal is to get slim and lean legs without bulkiness and you want to achieve it a bit faster, interval running could work very well for you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This type of workout will help you burn a LOT of calories and is great if you want to challenge yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there are some things you should take into consideration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>YOUR BODY TYPE<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Interval running may not be the best choice for endomorphs. If you are not already fit, I would not recommend it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you are sure you want to try interval running as your fat-burning HIIT routine, don\u2019t do a proper sprint. It\u2019s supposed to be more of a fast-paced interval run.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This shouldn\u2019t cause bulkiness like short and intense sprints usually do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, make sure you do it on a flat surface. Hill runs are great but you will build more muscle that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HOW TO COMPLETE THE INTERVAL RUNNING CIRCUIT<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>5-minute warm-up walk at 6-7km\/hr<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>400m run at around 14km\/hr (takes about 1 min 50 secs)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>60-second walk at 6km\/hr<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat as many times as you can. If you\u2019re a beginner, aim for 3-5 rounds. If you\u2019re advanced, aim for 8-10 rounds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>15 minute cool down walk at 6-7km\/hr<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>NOTE: You do not have to do your 400m run at 14km\/hr. However, it must be at a pace that is fast and quite difficult for you to maintain for 2 minutes. After the 2 minutes, you should be in desperate need of a rest. font-family:Arial,sans-serif; font-size:14px; font-style:normal; font-weight:normal; line-height:17px; text-decoration:none;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A post shared by Women\u2019s Health and Fitness (@rachael_attard)<\/a><\/p><\/div><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/center>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>HOW TO DO FAT BURNING HIIT IF YOU DON\u2019T WANT\/CAN\u2019T RUN<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can apply this same principle to other forms of gym equipment such as the bike or cross trainer\/elliptical even though I have to say that those are not as great as interval running. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you can\u2019t run for some reason, here are your alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>INTERVAL TRAINING ON A BIKE OR CROSS TRAINER\/ELLIPTICAL<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/how-to-get-skinny-legs-how-to-do-weights-without-getting-bulky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cycling can cause bulkiness<\/a>, especially if you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/how-to-get-skinny-legs-endomorph-nutrition-workout-guidelines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an endomorph body type<\/a>. By focusing on interval running instead of full-on sprints, you can stay in the fat-burning zone longer, making it a fantastic method for slimming down without bulking up.
