Systemic, in-depth education about perimenopause and menopause doesn&#8217;t really exist where I&#8217;m from (I&#8217;m from Australia). And from what I can gather based on the questions my clients ask me (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/about-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I&#8217;m a fully qualified PT and nutritionist<\/a> and women often ask me how should they eat and exercise during perimenopause and menopause), this type of education is not really a thing in other parts of the world as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since I get questions about perimenopause and menopause on a weekly basis and since I&#8217;m also nearing this period of my life (I&#8217;m turning 36 in March!), I wanted to share with you a bit more info on the following topics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>what are the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how these symptoms affect your physical and mental health,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how you should take care of your body and mind during this time,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how should you exercise during perimenopause and menopause<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>best supplements for perimenopause and menopause <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-symptoms-of-perimenopause-and-menopause\">WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF PERIMENOPAUSE AND MENOPAUSE?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Perimenopause typically begins in your late 30s to early 40s and it&#8217;s marked by hormonal fluctuations as the body gradually transitions towards menopause. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/menopause\/what-menopause\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Menopause<\/a>, on the other hand, is the point when a woman has not had a period for 12 consecutive months, and it typically starts at age 45\u201355.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Symptoms of Perimenopause and Menopause:<\/strong> The journey through perimenopause and menopause is unique for each woman, as are their symptoms, but common symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>hot flashes, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>night sweats, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>weight gain, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>mood swings, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>irregular periods, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>changes in sleep patterns, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>decline in bone density,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>changes in libido, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>vaginal dryness, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>thinning hair and dry skin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>These hormonal shifts can also affect your skin elasticity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/speed-up-your-metabolism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">slow your metabolism<\/a>, and increase the risk of conditions such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/osteoporosis\/osteoporosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">osteoporosis<\/a> (deterioration of bone health) and cardiovascular issues. So, let&#8217;s see what are some of the best exercises for women after the age of 40.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-is-exercise-important-during-perimenopause-and-menopause\"><strong>WHY IS EXERCISE IMPORTANT DURING PERIMENOPAUSE AND MENOPAUSE? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1660-4601\/17\/19\/7049\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Regular exercise<\/a> during perimenopause and menopause (and in general) offers many benefits that can significantly improve your overall well-being and vitality. It&#8217;s so much more than just a means to a longer life, more importantly, it offers a much better <strong>quality of life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Engaging in regular exercise helps counteract the challenges that menopause can bring by promoting cardiovascular health, maintaining a healthy weight, and improving mood through the release of endorphins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/whats-the-difference-resistance-strength-and-weight-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strength and resistance training <\/a>becomes particularly important during perimenopause menopause. This type of training helps with muscle loss and supports bone density. This is super important for reducing the risk of osteoporosis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/osteoporosis\/osteoporosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">especially for women of White and Asian descent who are more prone to developing osteoporosis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, exercise aids in better sleep patterns, which can be disrupted during perimenopause and menopause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-type-of-exercise-is-most-important-during-peri-menopause\"><strong>WHAT TYPE OF EXERCISE IS MOST IMPORTANT DURING (PERI)MENOPAUSE? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cardiovascular-exercise\"><strong>CARDIOVASCULAR EXERCISE<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>POWER WALKING<\/em> <em>(BRISK WALKING)<\/em> &#8211;<\/strong> Embrace the simplicity and effectiveness of walking. If you read my blog regularly, you probably already know that I&#8217;m a HUGE advocate for low-intensity cardio, walking to be precise. Walking is easy, free, and has a lot of benefits so I always recommend it to all my clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This low-impact exercise is gentle on the joints, boosts your cardiovascular health, and helps with weight management. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8926180\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This study<\/a> indicates that walking at least 30 minutes per day, 3 times per week, helps premenopausal women improve bone health. So the sooner you start walking, the better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aim for at least 30 minutes a day to keep your heart pumping and your energy levels high. As your endurance and stamina increase, slowly build up your walking time, aiming for 10,000 steps per day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CxXdwchvpUG\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF; Strengthening muscles helps combat age-related muscle loss and boosts metabolism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING<\/em>:<\/strong> HIIT workouts can help boost metabolism and burn more calories. Including compound exercises like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/do-squats-make-your-legs-bigger-or-smaller\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">squats<\/a>, lunges, and deadlifts can be beneficial for engaging multiple muscle groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach not only builds strength but also improves functional fitness, but it&#8217;s important to know that this type of training can<strong> increase cortisol levels<\/strong>. It can also cause joint pain, and increase the risk of injury due to the loss of bone density.
