ANALYZE YOUR BODY APPEARANCE<\/h3>\n\n<p>The quickest way to tell if you\u2019re \u201cskinny fat\u201d is to look closely at your body.<\/p>\n<p>Do you look slim in clothes, but notice soft arms, legs, or belly when in just your underwear instead of firm, toned muscles?<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Lack of Muscle Tone:<\/strong> You might find that even with a low body weight, your arms, legs, and core lack muscle definition.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Soft Appearance:<\/strong> Your abdomen or thighs may feel soft instead of firm, indicating excess fat. You might also notice fat in areas like your belly or love handles, even if you\u2019re not overweight.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. (I&#8217;m not saying all processed foods and carbs are bad and that you should never eat them. But I&#8217;d always recommend eating a balanced diet with enough complex carbs, lean protein and healthy fat for your needs.)<\/li>\n\n<li>Skinny fat women usually do not work out at all or only focus on doing cardio.<\/li>\n\n<li>They also tend to eat a low-protein diet (usually substituted with processed food and sugar) leading to excess fat buildup.<\/li>\n\n<li>Skinny fat women usually look good in clothes, but very flabby underneath.<\/li>\n\n<li>They can also experience a constant \u201csugar crash,\u201d or suffer from \u201dbrain fog.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>If you are a \u2018skinny\u2019 woman but struggle with excess fat around your midsection, hips, and thighs that you can\u2019t seem to get rid of, then you might be \u2018skinny fat\u2019.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHAT CAUSES A &#8216;SKINNY FAT&#8217; BODY IN WOMEN?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-38720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Skinny-fat-graphics-2-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"what causes the skinny fat look?\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Skinny-fat-graphics-2-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Skinny-fat-graphics-2-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Skinny-fat-graphics-2-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Skinny-fat-graphics-2.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>As mentioned above, one, two \u2013 or all of these \u2013 usually cause the \u2018skinny fat\u2019 body:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"list-style-type: 1;\" start=\"1\">\n<li>Doing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/cardio-qa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cardio<\/a>\u00a0only and avoiding\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/full-body-resistance-workout-for-a-lean-body\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resistance training<\/a><\/li>\n\n<li>Poor diet (unbalanced diet consisting mainly of heavily processed foods)<\/li>\n\n<li>Genetics<\/li>\n\n<li>Hormonal issues<\/li>\n\n<li>Extreme dieting<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>Skinny fat body can also be a result of losing too much muscle mass (which lowers<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/medicine-and-dentistry\/metabolic-rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a0your metabolic rate<\/a>) and adding fat by eating too many calories. In this case, you may maintain the same weight, go slightly above, or even lower in weight &#8211; but it\u2019s mainly fat, not muscle.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. YOU\u2019RE\u00a0DOING ONLY CARDIO WORKOUTS<\/h3>\n\n<p>Is your &#8221;getting rid of skinny fat workout regime&#8221; just cardio?<\/p>\n\n<p>I often see this syndrome in women who do lots of cardio and don\u2019t do any resistance training, because they\u2019re afraid it will make them look bulky.<\/p>\n\n<p>I understand this fear, as I had it myself. There are a lot of exercises and sports that combine a good cardio workout with strength training\/muscle building, such as rowing, walking on stairs, swimming, etc. Of course, they won&#8217;t build muscle as effectively as some other types of exercise, but these are also still an option.<\/p>\n\n<p>Your skinny fat workout must be based on building muscle that helps to keep your metabolism up and your body fat levels down.<\/p>\n\n<p>Avoiding resistance training can cause a skinny fat body look.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/how-to-get-skinny-legs-how-to-do-weights-without-getting-bulky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RELATED POST: HOW TO LIFT WEIGHTS WITHOUT GETTING BULKY<\/a><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. YOU HAVE A GENETIC PREDISPOSITION\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n<p>Being &#8216;skinny fat&#8217; can be a genetic trait.<\/p>\n\n<p>But don&#8217;t worry! YOU\u2019VE DONE SOME EXTREME DIETING BEFORE\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n<p>Lastly, a &#8216;skinny fat&#8217; body can happen when a person loses a lot of weight by just dramatically cutting his\/her calorie intake, without exercising.<\/p>\n\n<p>That is why women who diet a lot and mainly focus on the number on the scale (instead of on the overall health), usually end up looking slim (skinny) but not toned.<\/p>\n\n<p>If you have been exercising consistently (doing both cardio and resistance training) and eating a good diet, but still can\u2019t seem to get rid of the skinny fat body and tone up, then it could be worth seeing a health professional.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MY EXPERIENCE WITH BEING \u201cSKINNY FAT\u201d AND HOW I FIXED IT<\/h2>\n\n<p>I used to be \u201cskinny fat\u201d (you can see me in this phase in the image below). I was by no means overweight or anything like that but you can see I was definitely not toned and I had excess belly fat, and I always wondered before how do I get rid of a skinny fat belly?<\/p>\n\n<p>Before I started educating myself about fitness and nutrition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/about-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(I\u2019m now a fully certified group and personal trainer and nutritionist<\/a>), I made a lot of mistakes that impacted both my physical health and the way I looked.<\/p>\n\n<p>I used to exercise and stay active when I was in high school. My mum is an aerobics instructor and we loved (and still love) exercising together. But when I got to college, I was quite busy so I stopped training. I also didn\u2019t pay attention to my diet at that time and I used to party during the weekends.<\/p>\n\n<p>And then I gained weight (not really a surprise). I was unhappy and stressed and it all kinda got to be a bit too much for me. I realized I needed to make some changes so I decided to start training again.<\/p>\n\n<p>When I started, I only did cardio and skipped resistance training completely. I enjoyed cardio and I knew it would help with fat loss. But I didn\u2019t know that a good exercise routine needs to have both resistance training and cardio.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TAKING CARE OF MY DIET AND WORKOUT ROUTINE<\/h3>\n\n<p>It was only after I took care of my diet and added resistance training to my routine, that I was able to get rid of the skinny fat look.<\/p>\n\n<p>By taking care of my diet, I mean this. I learned what healthy eating means and I finally started eating the right amount of calories for my activity level. Before learning this, my diet was either &#8211; eating mostly junk food and too much of it or eating super strict &#8211; healthy but my calorie intake was too low for my needs. Both overeating and undereating are bad for you.<\/p>\n\n<p>And why did I need resistance training to get rid of the skinny fat body? You need resistance training to build muscle tone (you can do resistance training with weights, your own body weight, weighted machines, or resistance bands). Muscle is more metabolically active than fat. This means you&#8217;ll burn more calories if you have more muscles.<\/p>\n\n<p>So if you are looking to lose excess body fat, you should definitely do both cardio and resistance training. If you just stick to cardio and don\u2019t work on your muscle tone, you\u2019ll just end up looking \u201cskinny fat\u201d, like I did.<\/p>\n\n<p>I\u2019ll explain what you should do if you want to avoid the \u201cskinny fat\u201d look. WORKOUT PLAN FOR WOMEN?<\/h2>\n\n<p>If you are looking to tone up, get back your stamina and metabolism, and lose excess body fat, you will need to do a\u00a0<strong>combination of resistance training and cardio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. FOCUS ON RESISTANCE TRAINING AS YOUR MAIN WORKOUT<\/h3>\n\n<p>As I mentioned above, it\u2019s really important that you don\u2019t neglect resistance training.<\/p>\n\n<p>Building muscle will help\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3661116\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">improve your metabolism<\/a>\u00a0and also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/how-to-reduce-body-fat-in-one-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduce your\u00a0body fat levels<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The resistance training should include both a mix of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/full-body-hiit-workout-that-wont-add-bulk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">high-intensity interval training (HIIT)<\/a>\u00a0and circuits, using weights or body weight.<\/p>\n\n<p>HIIT is an awesome skinny fat exercise because it burns a really high number of calories in a short period of time.<\/p>\n\n<p>But the best part is,\u00a0<em>after<\/em>\u00a0your HIIT workout, you will continue to burn more calories.<\/p>\n\n<p>HIIT is one of the best exercise regimens to get rid of excess fat.<\/p>\n\n<p>However, another really common complaint I hear from women is that they become\u00a0<em>too<\/em>\u00a0muscular when doing HIIT and lifting weights, particularly in their legs.<\/p>\n\n<p>I have written a blog post on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/how-to-get-skinny-legs-how-to-do-weights-without-getting-bulky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">how to lift weights without getting bulky<\/a>, to help with this exact issue.<\/p>\n\n<p>It has some good guidelines and workout ideas that will help you tone up without getting bigger and too muscular.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/speed-up-your-metabolism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RELATED POST: HOW TO SPEED UP YOUR METABOLISM<\/a><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. DO SOME CARDIO (BUT DON\u2019T OVERDO IT)<\/h3>\n\n<p>If you are already slim, you don\u2019t necessarily need to do a lot of cardio.<\/p>\n\n<p>But <strong>I do recommend it to mix it up<\/strong> with your resistance training workouts so that you\u00a0<em>stay<\/em>\u00a0slim with all of the HIIT and weight lifting you will be doing.<\/p>\n\n<p>Plus <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/the-many-benefits-of-a-cardio-workout\">cardio has amazing and important health benefits<\/a>! Cardio is good for your heart and blood pressure, for your brain health, joints and range of motion. I know you may already know these but I also know a lot of people don&#8217;t like doing cardio and they tend to avoid so I think it&#8217;s important to mention it.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FULL &#8216;SKINNY FAT&#8217; WORKOUT PLAN FOR WOMEN<\/h2>\n\n<p>The skinny fat workout program below is only a framework to guide you and give you an idea of a great routine that will help you achieve your health and fitness goals.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-38740\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Skinny-fat-graphic-workout-schedule-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"weekly workout schedule to reduce the skinny fat look\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Skinny-fat-graphic-workout-schedule-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Skinny-fat-graphic-workout-schedule-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Skinny-fat-graphic-workout-schedule-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Skinny-fat-graphic-workout-schedule.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>My weekly workout recommendation to get rid of the &#8216;skinny fat&#8217; body composition would include the following:<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1-2 DAYS OF FULL BODY RESISTANCE TRAINING\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>You don\u2019t need to lift heavy weights<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 you can use bodyweight only, lighter dumbbells, resistance bands, ankle weights, and gliding discs. Just get those muscles working.<\/p>\n\n<p>Aim for a 30-minute resistance training workout.<\/p>\n\n<p>Also, please have a look at the blog post I mentioned above for some guidelines on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/how-to-get-skinny-legs-how-to-do-weights-without-getting-bulky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"how to lift weights without getting bulky (opens in a new tab)\">how to lift weights without getting bulky<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Here is an example of full-body resistance training.<\/p>\n\n<p>This is the type of workout you can do at home anytime.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UP8Bm0BQ4Ro<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1-2 DAYS OF HIIT: HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING<\/h3>\n\n<p>As I mentioned, HIIT is amazing for getting rid of excess fat, and the workouts don\u2019t need to be extreme or take much of your time! You can complete an amazing HIIT workout in 20-30 minutes.<\/p>\n\n<p>Just be careful not to overdo it on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/how-to-get-skinny-legs-hiit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">lower body HIIT exercises<\/a>, such as burpees, jump squats, jump lunges, box jumps, etc. as they can make your legs overly muscular (if that is something you want to avoid).<\/p>\n\n<p>I have posted lots of different\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/full-body-hiit-workout-wont-cause-bulk-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">HIIT workouts that won\u2019t cause bulk<\/a>, so have a look at these for some workout ideas.<\/p>\n\n<p>If you prefer not to do HIIT, that\u2019s OK.<\/p>\n\n<p>You can still get fantastic results with full-body resistance training, and I would aim for a total of 3 sessions per week. The point of any workout routine is that it shouldn&#8217;t be overbearing and that is should fit easily into your life in order to be sustainable, which is exactly the way we designed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our programs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1-2 DAYS OF HIGH-INTENSITY CARDIO\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n<p>High-intensity cardio can include exercises such as running, swimming, dancing, cycling, etc.<\/p>\n\n<p>Do something that you love so that you will actually stick to it! Keep your high-intensity cardio workouts to 20-30 minutes (obviously, if it\u2019s a dance class or spin class, you can go longer).<\/p>\n\n<p>Plus, it\u2019s a great idea to try and fit in as much low-intensity cardio as you want!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1-2 DAYS OF REST<\/h3>\n\n<p>It\u2019s really important to give your body some time to rest and your muscles to recover! Overtraining can cause you to hold onto excess body fat, so if you feel like your body needs a break, give it one.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"mce_30\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">THE BEST DIET REGIME TO GET YOU LEAN AND TONED<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-38723\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Blog-graphics-Your-paragraph-text-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Blog-graphics-Your-paragraph-text-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Blog-graphics-Your-paragraph-text-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Blog-graphics-Your-paragraph-text-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Blog-graphics-Your-paragraph-text.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>Diet plays a huge part in your body\u2019s ability to lose weight, so you can\u2019t just rely on a good workout program alone.<\/p>\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t\u00a0eat a balanced diet, you won\u2019t be able to reduce the excess body fat.<\/p>\n\n<p>In general, all that you really need is to focus on eating healthier, nutritional meals &#8211; but don&#8217;t restrict yourself. A balanced nutrition is one where you learn to have a healthy relationship with food and enjoy every type of food &#8211; in moderation.<\/p>\n\n<p>That is why I prefer to follow the 80-20 rule when it comes to nutrition. If you\u2019re curious to learn more about this rule, you may read about it in detail\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/why-i-follow-the-80-20-rule-healthy-eating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.\u00a0CUT THE PROCESSED FOOD\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n<p>A proper diet recommendation starts with getting rid of processed food.<\/p>\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need to do anything fancy with your nutrition \u2013 just reduce the packaged, heavily processed foods (think anything that comes in a bottle, packet, tin, or box), fizzy drinks, sugary foods, deep-fried food, and anything that is considered &#8216;junk&#8217; food, such as cakes and chocolate.<\/p>\n\n<p>I\u2019m not saying that you can\u00a0never\u00a0eat these, just try to limit them to a few times per week and stick to appropriate portion sizes.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.\u00a0REDUCE CARB\u00a0INTAKE<\/h3>\n\n<p>It is becoming more and more well-known that a\u00a0diet lower in carbohydrates\u00a0will help you lose weight quicker.<\/p>\n\n<p>A &#8216;skinny fat&#8217; diet regime should be focused on protein (which will help you build muscle) and healthy fats. But, don\u2019t cut out carbs completely, as your body still needs them and that\u2019s where all the fiber is!<\/p>\n\n<p>You just need to take another approach to this:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Switch any white carbs (i.e. bread, rice) to brown and whole-meal varieties<\/li>\n\n<li>Eat more carbs on your workout days and fewer carbs on your rest days<\/li>\n\n<li>Try to eat most of your carbs at breakfast or post-workout<\/li>\n\n<li>Aim to get most of your carbs from fruit, vegetables, and whole grains<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachaelattard.com\/low-carb-diets-good-or-bad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RELATED POST: ARE LOW-CARB DIETS GOOD OR BAD FOR YOU?<\/a><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. EAT MORE\u00a0VEGGIES<\/h3>\n\n<p>Focus on eating more fruit and vegetables on a daily basis- they contain a range of vitamins, minerals and fiber, which your body needs.<\/p>\n\n<p>I know you\u00a0probably always hear people talking about fiber and how you should try to eat more of it. If you&#8217;re having scrambled eggs,\u00a0add spinach and other green vegetables.<\/p>\n\n<p>Some of my favorite healthy snacks are carrot sticks and hummus, egg cups made from eggs and vegetables in muffin tins, and whole pieces of fruit.<\/p>\n\n<p>Lunch and dinner are a little easier to eat vegetables. Pack them in as much as you can!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.
